Closures Set for I-440/Western Boulevard Interchange This Weekend

RALEIGH — N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews have a series of closures planned at the Western Boulevard interchange this weekend as a part of the Interstate 440 Improvements Project.

At 9 p.m. Friday, both directions of Western Boulevard will close at the interchange.

Eastbound Western Boulevard traffic will follow a detour to I-440 West and Melbourne Road (Exit 1D) to turn around and take I-440 East to Western Boulevard (Exit 2). Traffic on I-440 West wanting to go east on Western Boulevard will follow the same detour.

Westbound Western Boulevard traffic will follow a detour to I-440 East and Hillsborough Street (Exit 3) to turn around and take I-440 West to Western Boulevard (Exit 2). Traffic on I-440 East wanting to go west on Western Boulevard will follow this detour as well. The ramp from westbound Western Boulevard to I-440 West was permanently closed last weekend.

These closures will allow crews to safely complete asphalt paving and lane striping operations necessary to complete the conversion to a diverging diamond interchange (DDI).

Weather permitting, the interchange will reopen in the new DDI pattern by 5 a.m. Monday, in time for the morning commute.

Motorists should slow down and pay attention throughout the work zone, particularly as they get used to the new driving pattern at the Western Boulevard interchange.
