NC State University Police Offering Steering Wheel Locks for Hyundai and Kia Vehicles

Due to a security flaw in Hyundai and Kia vehicles that make certain models more susceptible to theft, the NC State University Police Department is offering the university community free steering wheel locks to the owners of 2011-2022 Kia and Hyundai vehicles. The locks are for those vehicles requiring a steel key to turn and start the ignition.

If your car is affected and you need a free steering wheel lock, visit the NC State University Police Department located at 2610 Wolf Village Way, Raleigh, NC 27695 (24 hours) or the NC State Transportation Offices located at Admin Services I, 2127 Sullivan Dr., Raleigh, NC 27695 (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday).

  • You must show a valid NC State University identification card, AND
  • You must present a vehicle registration to verify that you are the owner or legal possessor of a Kia or Hyundai
  • Only one lock per person per affected vehicle

Kia and Hyundai are also rolling out free software upgrades fixing the anti-theft immobilizer issues. The companies notify owners by mail when their vehicle is eligible for the upgrade performed at a dealership. Owners are encouraged to visit https://owners.kia.com/us/en/kia-owner-portal.html for Kia, https://hyundaiantitheft.com/ for Hyundai, or call 1-800-333-4542 (Kia) or 1-888-498-0390 (Hyundai) for eligibility information and to schedule a software upgrade appointment.
