Varsity Parking Lot Expansion Receives the Apex Award for Surface Parking Facility Design

The NC State Transportation Department received the Apex Award for Surface Parking Facility Design at the IPMI Conference and Expo held in Columbus, OH, June 9-12.

NC State Transportation undertook a project to construct a 454-space surface parking lot to address the anticipated growth of 4,000 engineering and computer science students over the next five years as part of the Engineering North Carolina’s Future initiative. The design of this project also aligns with NC State’s 2014 and revised 2023 Master Plans.

“This submission stands out because it describes the project and facility and how it was designed with intention and integrated with the overall community.” Judge’s Comment

The parking lot, located along Varsity Drive, replaces dilapidated structures and enhances campus safety and aesthetics. It integrates sustainable practices such as drought-resistant landscaping and a comprehensive stormwater management system. Though initially planned for photovoltaic roof panels, budget constraints postponed their installation, prompting additional shade tree planting to mitigate heat effects.

Designed for functionality and safety, the lot features two-way traffic lanes, LED lighting, and extensive security measures, including emergency call stations and digital cameras. It supports mobility with sidewalks, bike racks, and proximity to mass transit stops, promoting a “park once” model.

Emphasizing campus connectivity, the lot bridges the gap between NC State’s campuses and enhances pedestrian access with raised tables and continuous sidewalks. Notably, the project preserved a 154-year-old pecan tree, showcasing a commitment to environmental stewardship.

“This lot used sustainable building methods that recycled materials from demolition, used 100% clean concrete and harvested local river rock. This, and the consideration for pedestrian and vehicular flow and micro-mobility, is the basis for an Apex Award.” Judge’s Comment

Completed in August 2023, the facility aims to balance the campus’s parking needs with sustainability and pedestrian safety, embodying NC State’s values of innovation and practicality.
