Transportation Continues Parking Lot Improvements

The Transportation Department has finished seal coating the Carmichael and Partner I Lots. The seal coating process allows us to prolong the life of the parking lots at a fraction of the cost.

What seal coating does is apply a layer or membrane on top of the asphalt. This layer protects the asphalt from the elements, oxidation, and other liquids or fuels that spill. It slows down the formation of cracks, minimizes raveling (which is caused by oxidation), prevents water penetration that can lead to more damage and potholes.

The lots should be seal coated every three to five years to prevent the layer from breaking down.
